If I Believe

If I Believe

If I believe in a God
I’ve never seen
Then I have to believe in Jamie

If God whom I’ve never touched exists
Then Jamie
Who came from my body
Who suckled at my breast
And slept by my side for nearly six years
Must too exist

If Jesus and Buddha and Krishna and Mohammed
And all the other enlightened beings
Live past their bodies
Then Jamie must live past his
If I can believe in all this
I must also believe in the spirit of my son

This is just one of the struggles
Left in the wake of your absence
What you were so sure of
What we taught you
I’m not sure I can still believe
